YIYUN ZHANG

Co Founder-Head of China

Yiyun Zhang is a professional film composer and classical and jazz pianist.  She was born in Kunming, Yunnan in southwest China.

Yiyun comes from a traditional Chinese music family background.  She started learning the piano at the age of six while taking lessons with Professor Yuanying Zhuang.  By the time she was twelve, Yiyun had completed her Classical Piano degree.  When she was 22, Yiyun moved to the United Kingdom to earn a degree at Leeds Beckett University. While she pursued this endeavor, Yiyun underwent tutelages with some of the country's best jazz pianists and singers including the revered musicians Jamil Sheriff at Leeds College Go Music and Tom Cawley at the Royal Academy of Music.

Yiyun was also very active in the art realm.  From 2015 to 2017, she worked as a photographer for London Jazzwise and Sussex Jazz Magazine.  Her audience grew immensely through her successful photographic exhibitions in Brighton.

Since her return to China in 2018, she began to apply her music making passion to collaborations with Matti Dubee, Yongning Zhang and Li Ma among many others.  When she is not busy honing her music writing craft, Yiyun produces and co-directs an independent art project.  Her latest show finished in May 2020 and is about Chinese opera art and installation design and will be released in October 2020 by Red Dragon Media Group.
